Christmas In The Smoky Mountains 320cbr (Big Papi) 1996 Appalachian Instrumental Music

Source: 1996 CD [image=tAbK1JmoHP] By Meredith VINE VOICE
I just discovered Craig Duncan's music this holiday season and I cannot get enough of it. Each track is played with a different combination of instruments, there is no vocal parts song on this CD. The musicians are very talented and the arrangements of the music uniquely done. I would describe the style as folk/bluegrass/old-fashioned. It made me feel that we were celebrating an Old Fashioned Christmas. I listened to the tracks of this CD and the Christmas in the Mountains CD also by Craig Duncan and chose this one (Christmas in the Smoky Mountains)for two reasons: 1. There was more diversity in the style of each song. In Christmas in the Mountains, each song had the same feel to it, V-I in musical terms or oom-pah. I liked the differentiation on this CD. 2. The choices of song were also diverese, you have olders songs like "I Saw Three Ships" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" as well as newer ones like "Silver Bells" and "Sleigh Ride." Overall, I recommend the CD to anyone who likes instrumental music and is looking for something different and unique. I know I will be buying more CD's of Craig Duncan in the future, he has a wide selection of hymn and christian music.
Garth Brooks - Beyond The Season 320cbr (Big Papi) 1991 Christmas Music

Source: 1991 CD This is an amazing CD. Even songs that are old and worn seem new coming from Garth. His voice isn't the greatest in the world but it is unique and very sincere. - Big Papi [image=NIMrnD0wUi] By Rodney
Garth Brooks is (needless to say) one of the biggest stars ever in music. His record sales are (again needless to say) up there with Elvis, The Beatles and Elton John. This album reached the top 3 back in Christmas 1992 and was still in the charts in the summer of 1993!! It's no surprise. This has to be one of the greatest Christmas CD's ever recorded. The album opens with "Go Tell It On The Mountain", a story about the first ever Christmas, Brooks gives it his best shot and it works really well. Oddly enough this album was recorded in July of 1993 in order to get it ready in time for Christmas. In an interview Brooks said he and his band put festive decorations up in the studio to make it feel like it was actually Christmas. This probably helped the sound of the album, such as the next two songs "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (an old Christmas classic) and "The Old Man's Back In Town" (an original Garth Brooks written Christmas tune) that is about another of the worlds most famous men - Santa Claus. "The Gift" is a story of when Jesus was young, and about how people bring him gifts and the main focus is on a poor orphan girl, who ends up bringing a gift fit for the king of kings. It may sound corny, but it works really well and it is Christmas after all, so it's allowed. The next track is "Unto You This Night". This is probably my favorite cut on the album if only for Garth's singing. He performs at his best and puts his heart and soul into this song. Backed by a gospel choir, this is very, very seasonal. Next up, is one of the most popular songs of the season. "White Christmas". It is also one of the most covered songs of all-time. The first version was by Bing Crosby and since that time it has been recorded by almost everyone in the business from Kenny Rogers and Elvis Presley, to Orville The Duck and New Kids On The Block! Garth's rendition of this song is first rate and even features an Elvis-like impersonation (at the very, very end), however, mostly it is pure Garth. "The Friendly Beasts" is a story about the animals of the world recalling the story of Jesus as we get to hear various band members and co-songwriters vocal duet with Garth. This is a very interesting track, though probably not the best. "Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy" (written by Country legend, Buck Owens) is kinda Rock N Roll. It's a nice look through a young kids eyes when he sees who he thinks is Santa putting out presents on the night before Christmas. ("Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy, Or Daddy looks a lot like him. It's not the way I had him pictured, Santa was much too thin"). The next track is "Silent Night", another one of the most popular Christmas songs and/or hymns ever. Brooks once again does a great version and even included is a recollection of his favorite Christmas. (Spoken during an instrumental break). Mary's Dream is a 60 second instrumental (short but sweet) that then takes us to the final song, "What Child Is This". Another story of Jesus' birth and another favorite of the season. All in all, you can't go wrong with this CD. A must for all fans of Garth, Country Music, Christian music and Christmas music.
Source: 2003 CD [image=lt7D4SKhNO] By shopcentz
1.The First Noel- Clay Aiken - By FAR...the BEST recording on the album. This is the reason I purchased this cd. I heard this and was bowled over - had to have it. Modestly lush arrangement, perfect for this song. Clay Aiken's rendition-beautiful. If I was hesitant about buying Measure of a Man( Clay's new cd)....this would convince me to DO IT! 2. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Ruben Studdard/Tamyra Gray - Ruben and Tamyra blend nicely on this song. I really like these two together! 3. Oh Come All ye Faithful-Ensemble A very nice a capella rendition. they blend well, yet this version is distinct enough so you can enjoy the solo parts.( yes, even Justin Guarini shines here) 4.Silent Night - Tamyra Gray - her beautiful voice soars here. 5.Silver Bells - Clay Aiken/Kimberley Locke - A VERY nice light and happy version here...Kimberley Locke adds such a warm touch to this melody...and Clay - right on the money - as usual. 6.Santa Claus Is Coming to Town - Ensemble - Jazzy touch - this Ensemble version is very upbeat...one of my favorites. 7. The Christmas Song - Kimberley Locke ...If anyone can pull this one off, it is Kimberley Locke... and in STYLE too! Her voice is as welcome and warm sun rays on a cold winter's day. Superb. 8.I'll Be Home for Christmas - Justin Guarini- Although I think Justin Guarini has a lot of talent...I don't feel his heart is in this one, or maybe I just don't like this particular arrangement. All in all, it is pleasant enough though. 9.Winter Wonderland - Christina Christian - Not my favorite, almost sounds like an actress overacting...even though I do like her voice. 10. This Christmas - Ruben Studdard - I really like this one by Ruben - very upbeat..kinda funky...his voice matches the arrangement perfectly. Bonus Disc - Kelly Clarkson 1.Oh Holy Night- Another a capella song...you can really get a feel for Kelly's awesome voice here. Might make you want to run out and buy Thankful (her cd). 2.My Grown up Christmas List - Very, very nice. Although I hesitated to buy this cd at first, only choosing to do so on the strenghth of the The First Noel, I now feel I got MORE than my money's worth.
Randy Travis - An Old Time Christmas 320cbr (Big Papi) 1989 Country Christmas Music

Source: 1989 CD [image=g7htkKJinx] By Peter Durward Harris
This was recorded by Randy in the late eighties, at the peak of his popularity. It is a well-balanced mix of originals and standards - five of each. The five originals are made up of two sad songs of lost love (White Christmas makes me blue and Oh what a silent night) and three happy songs (How do I wrap my heart up for Christmas?, Old time Christmas and my favorite track on the album, Meet me under the mistletoe). The standards are well-chosen, including God rest ye merry gentlemen, perhaps the least-covered among them. Even the happy songs never rise above mid-tempo, although that's just the style of the album and it works well. This is not a Christmas party album, but it is great for those moments when you can relax around a warm fire (as suggested by the closing song).
Source: 1995 CD In case you are wondering "New Country" was a term coined for 90's country music. I'm not an expert but New Country really blurred the lines between rock and country music. It was like making rock music but using country twang in the voice. My opinion only...not an expert. And...some of these artists are from the 80's - Big Papi [image=pUD4Svauwm]

Source: 2006 CD [image=bYnl0GvohJ] By Lisa H-K
I got a sample of his music in a Hawaii travel book, and listened to it about a month after returning from Kauai. I was immediately transported back to all that I love about Hawaii. In addition, his music brings together many things I like about music - melodious, caring, inspiring, relaxing. I just feel wonderful when I am listening to it. This album is a great combination of that wonderful Hawaiian feeling plus some of the traditional Christmas music
Source: 2005 CD Well, this stuff is like sugar coated sugar if you're into that thing. I can't help but to imagine the Stepford Wives or the housewife slurping down Martinis while popping oxy's and pretending everything is alright when I listen to this. Plus, I am put off by a Christrian group not using the word "Christmas" in their CD title. It may not be their intent but it comes across as a church being politically correct. These ladies have a fairly sizable following so it is doubtful my little pirate rant will affect their careers. - Big papi [image=MD8yWGIVhb]

Source: 2002 CD By Pastor Roger
I'm a huge fan of Kenny G. I fell in love with his music when "Songbird" first hit the airwaves in the 80's. I can't say that he's ever recorded a bad song or CD. But there are some that I like better than others. This is one of them. To go one better, I found this for sale in the internet from a used CD shop less than a month after it came out! To go one better, it was less than $$$ and in brand new condition! That in itself was excellent! I have Kenny G's other 2 holiday CD's. While I love all 3 of them, this is the best by far. 7 of the songs of this disc are what people refer to as religious holiday music. Don't get me wrong. I love holiday music, whether spiritual or secular. But my preference is for the sacred. My favorites on this disc are "Oh Holy Night," "Joy To The World," and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Kenny G adds his own unmistakeable smooth style as he does the rest of his music. I do have 2 complaints about this CD. First, the last song on it is "Auld Lang Syne, The Freedom Mix." It has some of the same stuff from the 20th Century that's included in "Auld Lang Syne, The New Millennium Mix" on his last holiday collection. The only difference is that he added a few extra historic items that happened since 1999. My other complaint is that this collection is only 38 minutes long. I think Kenny G could have lengthen it a bit. But these 2 complaints are minor. It's still an excellent holiday collection. Once again, hats off to Kenny G!
Dolly Parton - Home For Christmas 320cbr (Big Papi) 1990 Country Christmas Music

Source: 1990 CD [image=Idr3TqAsjn] By James Fenos
The dulcimer intro on "We Three Kings" took me by surprise. How classy is that?? Dolly manages to take an album of covers (technically) and makes the songs uniquely hers. For the country fan, there's lots of twang which seemed to stand out on her Columbia albums, not to mention a slant toward gospel. This album is a nice mix of secular and non-secular music. With Dolly's strength, I would have loved to hear her tackle more difficult songs in the way of "O Holy Night" or "Ave Maria." Dolly has taken standards like "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and turned it into bluegrass romp. Maybe a bluegrass holiday album might be in the not too distant future and Dolly will take on more difficult fare. In the meantime, Dolly's in fine voice and it's clear she had a great time making this cd. The only mis-step is the spoken intro at the beginning of the album and the congregation style choir and preacher on "The First Noel" and again spoken verse on "Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer." Outside of these teeny details, this is a fine album to play as you hang your ornaments on the tree. Happy Holidays!!
